EVENT - Life & Times of Jane Austen's Emma (7 DEC)
Explore the Regency and discover the best seller of 1816 - Jane Austen’s Emma. It was published in December 1815 and was the last book she published in her lifetime. This walk is a celebration of that book.
Jane drafted Emma in 1814 and wrote it whilst living at Chawton Cottage, about the same time Mansfield Park was published. Once completed, it was submitted to Murray her London publisher who offered £450 for it. It’s one of her most beloved novels, and you can find out more about Jane’s dedication to the Prince Regency and a hint of a marriage on this wonderful walk.
Walk in Jane’s footsteps and step back in time to discover the village she knew, through the leafy trees and paths of the village of Chawton, where Jane lived the last eight years of her life.
Discover for the first time, or recall with delight, the story of Emma and the characters that make up this lovely novel.
Is Emma loveable?
Is Frank Churchill a gentleman?
Can we be friends with Jane Fairfax?
Throughout the walk, readings from her novels and letters will bring her world to life.
Your tour guide, Emma Darlington, is an author of five Jane Austen’s books including Jane Austen’s Prayers, and is currently promoting her Jane Austen Travel Guide, coming out in the Spring of 2025.
